Mark Birkin is Professor of Spatial Analysis and Policy at the School of Geography, University of Leeds. His major research interest is in the simulation of social and demographic change within cities and regions, and in understanding the impact of these changes in substantive application areas ranging from retailing, education and crime to housing and infrastructure provision.
Previously, Mark was Director of GMAP (Geographical Modelling and Planning) Ltd and Director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Informatics at the University of Leeds. He is also leader of the JISC-funded e-infrastructure for social simulation, has been a principal investigator in the National Centre for e-Social Science, a member of EPSRC’s Infrastructure Transitions Research Consortium, and co-editor of the journal Applied Spatial Analysis and Policy.
